First-Ever All-Femals Antartic Expedition Busts Women’s Endurance Myth
Women who trekked across Antarctica in the first-ever all-female expedition broke more than gender norms — they also busted the gender myth that, when it comes to extreme endurance exercise, women are weaker than men.  Sorry men, that’s not the case.  “Our findings contain some potentially myth-busting data on the impact of extreme physical activity on women,” lead study author Dr. Robert Gifford, of the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Cardiovascular Science, said in a statement. “We have shown that with appropriate training and preparation, many of the previously reported negative health effects [of extreme exercise on women] can be avoided.”

Women’s Lives, Behind the Data
The story of women is often told through numbers.  Reports and studies tell us how much less women make than men, how much more unusual it is for girls to go to school than it is for boys or how much less likely women are to hold elected office or run companies than men.  Those analyses are important, but they can sometimes obscure the deeper truths and facts on the ground of women’s lived experience. We know 62 million girls are not in school. Why is that the case, and how can we do better? We are told one in five women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. How accurate are those numbers, and what can they really tell us about safety? We have heard women outlive men, often by a decade or more. What does life look like after a partner dies? Here are some of the stories behind those numbers.  Read the full article from the Washington Post here.

Opinion: Let Women be Warriors: It’s time to stop questioning whether women should be in combat units
In the nearly three years since the Pentagon allowed women to join front-line combat units, questions about the policy have not gone away. Two former Marines — Owen West, now an assistant secretary of defense, and his father, the military writer Bing West — said women in the infantry would “swiftly reduce combat effectiveness.” In The American Conservative, Scott Beauchamp could see no benefit in bringing women into combat roles and suggested that the Pentagon was cynically trying to bolster recruiting during ill-conceived wars.  Click here to read the full article.

Women Benefit from Mammography Screening Beyond Age 75
Women age 75 years and older should continue to get screening mammograms because of the comparatively high incidence of breast cancer found in this age group, according to a new study being presented next week at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).  Click here to read the full article.
